How Long Does a Windshield Replacement Appointment Take?

Most windshield replacement appointments take between 2.5 and 4.5 hours, depending on your vehicle, the type of glass being replaced, and whether ADAS calibration is required. More complex jobs, such as panoramic sunroofs, motorhomes, truck power sliding rear windows, and some luxury or exotic vehicles, may require a full-day appointment.

Every vehicle is different, and we schedule enough time to complete the job safely and correctly. A proper windshield replacement involves more than simply installing new glass. Our technicians carefully remove the damaged glass, prepare the bonding surface, install the new windshield using manufacturer-approved urethane adhesive, allow the required primer flash and adhesive cure times, clean any remaining glass debris, and perform a final quality inspection before your vehicle is returned.

For vehicles equipped with Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), additional time may be required to perform manufacturer-recommended camera calibration. Depending on your vehicle, this may involve a static calibration, dynamic calibration, or both to ensure features such as Lane Keep Assist, Adaptive Cruise Control, and Automatic Emergency Braking continue to operate as intended.

Typical Windshield Replacement Appointment Times

  • Standard windshield replacement (no ADAS): Approximately 2.5 hours
  • Windshield replacement with ADAS calibration: Approximately 3.5 to 4.5 hours
  • Complex glass replacements: Sunroofs, truck power sliders, motorhomes, and specialty vehicles may require up to a full business day

At GlassMasters, we never rush an installation. Taking the time to follow proper installation procedures helps ensure your windshield performs as designed in the event of a collision and allows us to confidently stand behind every installation with our lifetime workmanship warranty.

What Is ADAS Calibration, and Do I Need It After Windshield Replacement?

Yes. If your vehicle has a windshield-mounted camera or Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), calibration is typically required after a windshield replacement. Calibration ensures safety features such as Lane Keep Assist, Adaptive Cruise Control, Automatic Emergency Braking, and Collision Warning continue to operate according to the vehicle manufacturer's specifications.

ADAS stands for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems. Many modern vehicles use cameras mounted to the windshield to monitor the road and assist the driver. These systems can include:

  • Lane Departure Warning (LDW)
  • Lane Keep Assist (LKA)
  • Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC)
  • Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB)
  • Forward Collision Warning
  • Traffic Sign Recognition
  • Automatic High Beams
  • Rain-Sensing Wipers
  • Driver Attention Monitoring
  • Tesla Autopilot
  • Ford BlueCruise
  • Other manufacturer-specific driver assistance features

Although the camera may only move by a fraction of a millimetre during windshield replacement, that small change can significantly affect how the system interprets distances, lane markings, and surrounding traffic. For this reason, many vehicle manufacturers require the camera to be recalibrated whenever the windshield is replaced.

Types of ADAS Calibration

The calibration procedure depends on the vehicle manufacturer and the specific driver assistance systems installed.

Static Calibration

Static calibration is performed inside the shop using manufacturer-approved targets positioned at precise distances and angles in front of the vehicle. Specialized diagnostic equipment communicates with the vehicle and recalibrates the camera so it accurately understands its position relative to the vehicle.

Dynamic Calibration

Dynamic calibration is completed by driving the vehicle under manufacturer-specified conditions. The camera uses lane markings, road features, and surrounding traffic to learn its position and verify proper operation. Manufacturers specify factors such as road type, weather conditions, driving speed, and distance travelled.

Dual (Static and Dynamic) Calibration

Some vehicles require both procedures. A static calibration is completed first, followed by a dynamic calibration drive. Honda and Acura vehicles commonly require dual calibration, although other manufacturers may also specify this process.

Why Proper Calibration Matters

ADAS features are designed to assist the driver in avoiding collisions and reducing the severity of accidents. If the windshield-mounted camera is not calibrated correctly, these systems may not detect lanes, vehicles, pedestrians, or obstacles as accurately as intended.

Following the manufacturer's calibration procedures helps ensure these advanced safety systems continue to perform as designed after windshield replacement.

Does Every Windshield Replacement Require ADAS Calibration?

No. Not every windshield replacement requires ADAS calibration. Vehicles without windshield-mounted cameras typically do not require calibration. However, if your vehicle is equipped with a forward-facing camera or the manufacturer specifies calibration after windshield replacement, it should be completed as part of the installation process.

At GlassMasters, we follow manufacturer-recommended calibration procedures whenever they are required. Our goal is to return every vehicle with its safety systems operating according to the manufacturer's specifications, giving you confidence that your driver assistance features continue to perform as intended.

Does GlassMasters Offer Shuttle, Mobile, or Pick-Up and Delivery Service?

GlassMasters does not offer a traditional shuttle service. Instead, we offer Mobile Auto Glass Service and Pick-Up & Delivery (P&D) Service to make windshield replacement and auto glass repair as convenient as possible while ensuring every installation is completed safely and correctly.

Mobile Auto Glass Service

Our fully equipped mobile service vehicles can complete most standard windshield replacements and auto glass repairs at your home or workplace.

During our summer mobile season (April through September), we can typically perform mobile installations outdoors when weather conditions are suitable.

During our winter mobile season (October through March), we require access to a heated indoor space, such as a garage or shop. This helps ensure the windshield adhesive cures properly and the installation meets manufacturer recommendations.

Mobile service is ideal for many standard auto glass replacements. However, some vehicles require in-shop service due to the complexity of the repair, the need for ADAS calibration, or manufacturer-specific installation requirements.

Pick-Up & Delivery Service

If your vehicle requires ADAS calibration, has a windshield-mounted camera, or involves a more complex glass replacement, our Pick-Up & Delivery service may be the better option.

With Pick-Up & Delivery service, a GlassMasters team member will:

  • Perform a video walk-around to document your vehicle's condition before pickup.
  • Transport your vehicle safely to our shop.
  • Complete the required auto glass service.
  • Perform any necessary ADAS calibration.
  • Return your vehicle to the original pickup location.
  • Review aftercare instructions and complete payment.

Pick-Up & Delivery allows you to continue your day while our technicians complete your repair using the proper equipment and procedures.

Service Availability and Pricing

Mobile Service and Pick-Up & Delivery are generally available within approximately 15 minutes of city limits. Availability may vary depending on distance, weather conditions, seasonal factors, vehicle requirements, and scheduling.

Current service fees are:

  • Mobile Service: Starting at $25
  • Pick-Up & Delivery Service: Starting at $50

Please contact your nearest GlassMasters location for current pricing and availability in your area.

Which Service Is Right for Me?

Our team will recommend the most appropriate service based on your vehicle, the type of glass being replaced, your location, and whether manufacturer-required ADAS calibration is necessary.

Our goal is to provide the most convenient option while ensuring every installation is completed safely, correctly, and according to manufacturer specifications.

Does GlassMasters Warranty Windshield Replacements?

Yes. GlassMasters stands behind every windshield replacement with a lifetime workmanship warranty and a lifetime warranty on the urethane bond used to install your windshield. We also provide warranty coverage for qualifying manufacturer defects in the glass itself.

Our goal is to ensure your new windshield is installed safely, performs as intended, and meets the highest quality standards.

What Does the GlassMasters Warranty Cover?

Our warranty includes:

  • Lifetime workmanship warranty: Coverage for issues related to the quality of the installation.
  • Lifetime urethane bond warranty: Coverage on the windshield adhesive bond to help ensure a proper seal for as long as you own the vehicle.
  • Manufacturer defect warranty: Coverage for qualifying defects in the glass, including:
    • Optical distortion or "fishbowl" effect
    • Laminate inclusions
    • Manufacturing imperfections
    • Moulding adhesion defects

If you experience a concern that may be related to installation quality or a manufacturer defect, we encourage you to bring your vehicle to any GlassMasters location for inspection.

What Is Not Covered Under Warranty?

Auto glass is exposed to everyday road conditions, similar to other vehicle components such as tires and brake pads. Our warranty does not cover damage caused by external impacts, normal wear, or accidental damage.

The warranty does not cover:

  • Rock chips
  • Flying road debris
  • New cracks caused by impact
  • Vandalism
  • Wiper scratches
  • Normal wear, pitting, or abrasion from road use

Unfortunately, even a brand-new windshield can be damaged by a rock shortly after installation. This type of accidental damage is not considered a manufacturing defect or installation-related issue.

What Is a Pressure Crack?

In rare cases, a windshield may develop a manufacturer-related pressure crack.

Pressure cracks typically appear as a nearly straight crack extending across the windshield without a visible impact point, chip, or change in direction. Because pressure cracks can resemble other types of damage, one of our technicians will inspect the windshield to determine whether the issue is related to a manufacturing defect or an external impact.

As a general guideline, if a windshield develops a crack more than 72 hours after installation, it is less likely to be related to a manufacturing pressure crack. However, every warranty concern is evaluated individually based on the condition of the glass and the evidence available during inspection.

Have a Windshield Warranty Question?

If you believe your windshield may have a manufacturing defect or installation concern, contact your nearest GlassMasters location. Our team will inspect the windshield, explain our findings, and recommend the most appropriate next step.

Can I Wait During My Windshield Replacement?

Yes. You're welcome to wait at any GlassMasters location while your vehicle is being serviced.

Our waiting areas are clean, comfortable, and designed to make your visit as convenient as possible. While your vehicle is being repaired, you can enjoy:

  • Complimentary coffee

  • Comfortable seating

If your vehicle requires a longer appointment, such as an ADAS calibration or a complex glass replacement, our team will provide an estimated completion time and discuss the most convenient options with you.

Can I Get a Same-Day Windshield Replacement?

Same-day windshield replacement may be available depending on technician availability, glass inventory, vehicle requirements, and scheduling. Appointments are recommended to ensure the correct glass is available and enough time is reserved to complete your installation safely and correctly.

Scheduling an appointment helps our team prepare for your vehicle ahead of time, including confirming glass availability and identifying whether additional services such as ADAS calibration may be required.

If you need a windshield replacement quickly, contact our team and we'll help determine the fastest available option for your vehicle.

What Is Windshield Ceramic Coating, and Is It Worth It?

Windshield ceramic coating is an optional protective treatment that can improve water repellency, visibility, and ease of cleaning. It is especially beneficial for drivers who frequently travel on highways, drive in wet conditions, or want to reduce the time spent cleaning their windshield.

Ceramic coating bonds to the surface of the glass and creates an ultra-smooth, transparent layer that reduces friction. This makes it more difficult for water, dirt, bugs, road grime, and other contaminants to stick to the windshield.

What Are the Benefits of Ceramic Coating?

Many drivers choose windshield ceramic coating because it can help:

  • Improve water repellency during rain and wet weather.
  • Increase visibility at highway speeds by helping water bead and move off the windshield.
  • Reduce glare during wet-weather and nighttime driving.
  • Make bugs, salt, tree sap, and road grime easier to remove.
  • Reduce everyday surface wear and fine scratching.
  • Make routine windshield cleaning faster and easier.

Many customers also choose to have ceramic coating applied to side windows, rear glass, mirrors, and other glass surfaces because of its long-lasting water-repellent properties.

Does Ceramic Coating Prevent Rock Chips?

No. Ceramic coating does not prevent all rock chips, cracks, or impact damage.

However, it can help protect the surface of the glass from minor abrasion and everyday environmental wear. Ceramic coating should be viewed as preventative maintenance—it helps your windshield handle daily conditions better, but it cannot eliminate damage caused by road debris or impacts.

Is Windshield Ceramic Coating Worth It?

For many drivers, windshield ceramic coating is a worthwhile upgrade. If you frequently drive on highways, experience heavy rain or winter conditions, or want easier windshield maintenance, the improved water repellency and easier cleaning can provide noticeable benefits.

Ceramic coating is available starting at $60 installed and is often packaged with premium wiper blades and Rock Chip Passes for additional value.

Why Is There Tape on My Windshield After Replacement?

The two pieces of black tape on your windshield after replacement are normal and are used during the installation process to help keep mouldings, trim pieces, and setting components properly positioned while the windshield adhesive begins curing.

During windshield installation, your new glass is bonded to the vehicle using a high-strength urethane adhesive. The tape helps maintain proper alignment and prevents movement of certain components while the adhesive and moulding materials stabilize.

When Should I Remove the Tape?

Please leave the tape in place for 24 hours from the time you pick up your vehicle.

After 24 hours, the tape can be safely removed. GlassMasters uses high-quality automotive tape designed for clean removal; however, leaving the tape on longer than recommended may allow adhesive residue to build up and become more difficult to remove.

Have Questions After Your Windshield Replacement?

If you have any concerns about your windshield installation after leaving the shop, contact your nearest GlassMasters location. Our team will be happy to inspect the installation and answer any questions you may have.

What Is the Difference Between OEM and Aftermarket Auto Glass?

The main difference between OEM and aftermarket auto glass is the branding, source, and cost—not necessarily the safety or basic function of the glass.

OEM glass includes the vehicle manufacturer's branding and is produced for use as original equipment. Aftermarket glass is produced as a replacement part without the vehicle manufacturer's logo and is typically a more affordable option.

Both OEM and quality aftermarket auto glass are designed to fit specific vehicles and must meet applicable automotive safety standards, including DOT requirements and AS1 safety standards.

What Is OEM Auto Glass?

OEM stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer.

OEM glass is the glass originally supplied for a vehicle when it was manufactured. It may be produced by the vehicle manufacturer itself or by a glass manufacturer contracted by that vehicle manufacturer.

For example, a vehicle manufacturer such as Ford may work with a glass manufacturer such as Carlite (a subsidiary of Carlex) to produce windshield glass featuring the Ford logo.

OEM glass typically includes:

  • The vehicle manufacturer's logo or branding.
  • Original design specifications.
  • Manufacturer-approved fitment and attachments.

What Is Aftermarket Auto Glass?

Aftermarket auto glass is replacement glass produced for a specific vehicle without the vehicle manufacturer's logo or trademark.

Many aftermarket glass manufacturers are also suppliers to vehicle manufacturers and produce glass for multiple automotive brands. The primary difference is that aftermarket glass does not carry the vehicle manufacturer's branding.

Differences between OEM and aftermarket glass may include:

  • Vehicle manufacturer logos and trademarks.
  • Minor cosmetic differences, such as frit appearance (the black border around many windshields).
  • Differences in available options depending on the vehicle application.

Is Aftermarket Glass Safe?

Yes. Quality aftermarket auto glass is designed to meet automotive safety requirements and must comply with applicable standards, including DOT and AS1 requirements.

The most important factors in a windshield replacement are:

  • Correct glass specification for the vehicle.
  • Proper installation procedures.
  • Quality installation materials.
  • Correct calibration of safety systems such as ADAS cameras when required.

A properly installed windshield is an important structural and safety component of your vehicle, regardless of whether the glass is OEM or aftermarket.

Is OEM Glass Better Than Aftermarket Glass?

OEM glass can be the right choice for customers who specifically want the original manufacturer branding or prefer the exact glass supplied during vehicle production.

However, many customers choose quality aftermarket glass because it provides a cost-effective replacement option while still meeting required safety standards.

In many cases, the actual glass manufacturer may be the same company supplying both OEM and aftermarket products. The difference is often the branding, trademark, and distribution channel.

Which Type of Glass Does GlassMasters Recommend?

The best choice depends on your vehicle, insurance coverage, personal preference, availability, and any manufacturer-specific requirements.

GlassMasters can help you understand the available options for your vehicle and recommend a solution based on fit, function, safety requirements, and value.
